The funds raised in Japan from September 2001 went to the Japanese NGO, Association for Aid and relief (AAR), which has demining operations in Afghanistan. This is in cooperation with a British NGO - The HALO Trust and has been running since October 1999. Up until May 2001 265,570 square metres of land has been made safe, which is equal to 1,021 tennis courts. Altogether 465 landmines and 266 unexploded bombs have been removed.
